Gastrostomy Tube Care and Management Training Course 
  • Gastrostomy tubes may be placed endoscopically, surgically, or radiologically.
  • This topic will review the placement and routine care of gastrostomy tubes, including management of dysfunctioning gastrostomy tubes, with a focus on percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy tubes. The indications for gastrostomy tube placement and complications associated with gastrostomy tubes are discussed separately.
Aims of the workshop:
  • Explore concepts of contemporary gastrostomy indications, complications , care and management theory in order to develop your knowledge within a multi- professional health and social care setting
  • Contribute to and manage a high performance and effective skills in management of gastrostomy feeding ,management and care
  • Develop your ability to link theories with practice through critical skills assessment and clinical competencies.
  • Enhance the knowledge and skills of registered nurses and other healthcare professionals in performing safely and competently the care and management of gastrostomy tube.
Learning Outcomes
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the gastro intestinal tract
  • Describes indications/complications of gastrostomy
  • Describe Immediate Post-placement management
  • Demonstrate daily care and management of PEG tube
  • Demonstrate infection control and prevention and ANTT in administration of feeds and medication
  • Demonstrate checking the position of PEG tube by pH measurement
  • Demonstrate correct documentation and reporting
  • Demonstrate provision of appropriate, competent and safe enteral feeding, stoma care and care of gastrostomy using a hunger man manikin.
